Description
Genus Ficus,
a genus of about 900 species of trees, shrubs and vines in the family Moraceae,
many of which are commonly known as figs. They are mainly native to the
tropical regions of East Asia and are distributed in tropical regions around
the world. Many are tall forest trees supported by spreading roots. Others are
planted for ornamental purposes. Most Ficus species are evergreen. There are
deciduous members in non-tropical regions. The leaves are usually simple and
waxy, and most exude white or yellow latex when broken. Many species have
aerial roots and some are epiphytic. The unusual fruit structure known as
ciconium is hollow, enclosing an inflorescence with small male and female
flowers inside.
