The leaves are variably opposite and the lower leaves are usually simple or sometimes compound. The flowers are reddish-purple, large, drooping, with spreading panicles and strong opposite branches.

Bryophyllum is a medicinal plant that is widely used in folk medicine for various treatments. Native to Madagascar, naturalized in tropical and subtropical regions.
