It is an evergreen shrub, 8 to 9 m tall, either self-supporting or attached to other tree trunks as an epiphyte. The leaves are palmate, with 7 to 9 leaflets, which are 9 to 20 cm long and 4 to 10 cm wide (often culturally small), peripheral, and wedge-shaped at the base. It has an entire margin, sometimes with a blunt or pointed tip. The leaves are leathery in texture, glossy green, glabrous on the upper surface and slightly lighter and dull on the underside. Young plants have smaller leaves and fewer leaflets. Each lobe has a central rib that divides it in half, with 4-6 ribs clearly visible to his third. The stipules are united into petioles and are 12–15 cm long.
Distribution
The species is native to China, but has been largely naturalized. It is now found in the tropical regions of northern Australia. It has been found to compete significantly with native species in areas of Queensland.
